    Annual Mock Trial presented by WilliamsMcCarthy

    Regristration and Continental breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m.

    Program 8:00 - Noon  (Box lunches will be provided).

    This program will feature live presentation, including actual video evidence and PowerPoint presentation of testimony, drawn from an actual case involving binding arbitration of a grievance challenging involuntary termination of union member for violation of the employer’s drug and alcohol policy.  This interactive program will be presented by the attorneys who represented the employer in the sample case who will identify issues and answer questions raised during the presentation

    Topics to be explored will include for cause versus at will employment, employer obligations in documenting performance issues in the union context and the employer’s burden of demo

     

    Guest presenters are attorneys with the Rockford, Illinois based law firm of WilliamsMcCarthyLLP.

    Stephen E. Balogh is a partner in the Rockford law firm of WilliamsMcCarthyLLP, where he concentrates his practice in the litigation of employment, labor, civil rights, and commercial matters, on behalf of both private and governmental entities.  Steve has represented clients before the Supreme Courts of Illinois and Wisconsin, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Central Districts of Illinois and the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States.  He has also represented clients before many different federal agencies and both Illinois and Wisconsin agencies tasked with enforcement of state and federal employment and labor laws.  Steve is a past president of the Winnebago County Bar Association and a past Chair of the Illinois State Bar Association Labor & Employment Law Section Council.  He is also active in the Wisconsin State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, the Seventh Circuit Bar Association.  Steve received his undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Maryland, and his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Illinois College of Law.  Before completing his education, Steve was on active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps.  He is a member of the Rockford Area Chapter of SHRM.

     

    Laura D. Mruk is an associate in the Rockford law firm of WilliamsMcCarthyLLP, where she concentrates her practice in the litigation of employment, landlord/tenant, commercial, trust and estate matters.  Laura also focuses on appellate law having briefed cases in the Illinois appellate courts, the Seventh Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.  Laura is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Illinois, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.  In addition to representing employers in litigation matters, Laura also advises clients on implementing and administering employment policies.  Laura is currently associate editor for the Illinois State Bar Association’s Labor & Employment Law Section Council and the Corporate Law Department Section Council.  Laura received her undergraduate degree, high honors, from Cedarville University, and her Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from Northern Illinois University.  .She is also a black belt in tae kwon do.
